As we all know, the diagnostic and troubleshooting utilities of Mark Russinovich are extremely useful. If you have a machine that is hooked up to the Net, you no longer have to download and unzip them. Russinovich and his gang are continuously updating the existing tools and create new ones. Ever wonder if your PC has been invaded by spyware or adware? Here are some key symptoms that just might tell you yes or no. Endless pop-up windows Redirected to web sites rather than the one you wanted to go to New toolbars appear in your web browser. * New icons appear in the task tray. * You suddenly have a new home page on your browser. * Search engine has changed. * Windows error messages begin to appear. * Your PC is sluggish whether opening programs or doing tasks.

(An Ounce of Prevention) Here are a few ways to prevent attacks. Of course you need quality anti-spyware like CounterSpy, but the ideas below will help defend your information and your computer.

With improved technology and world-wide Internet access, spam, or unsolicited bulk email, is now a widely used medium for committing traditional white collar crimes including financial institution fraud, credit card fraud, and identity theft, among others. It is usually considered unsolicited because the recipients have not opted to receive the email. Generally, this bulk email refers to multiple identical messages sent simultaneously. Those sending this spam are violating the Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing (CAN SPAM) Act, Title 18, U.S.C., Section 1037. Spam can also act as the vehicle for accessing computers and servers without authorization and transmitting viruses and Botnets. The subjects masterminding this Spam often provide hosting services and sell open proxy information, credit card information, and email lists illegally. If you believe you may have fallen victim to this type of scam and wish to report it, please file a complaint with us.Below Link. Link to GetSatisfaction below.)

* Make sure your patches are up to date * Make sure your AV and AS signatures are up to date * If you get a popup, click on the X icon in the upper right hand corner. Do *not use the close button on the popup. * Should a dialog window open requesting to run a program and you are not familiar with that program always click no. * Free software from unknown companies is a NO NO. * Email links can lead to disaster. Sites visited can be homes for malware. Don't go there unless you really know the company and even then look before you link. You also might get an email from a company you DO know. It might be a phishing attempt to lure you in. Do not click on them either. * Do not download "helpful" toolbars from unknown companies. The only ones they help are the gangsters that developed them in the first place. They want your info - don't hand it to them. * Don't get caught up in email scams like downloading Paris or greeting cards from any unknown person. Just don't do it!

Be wary on the Internet; the information you save might be your own. Beware of DriveCleaner

DriveCleaner is not your friend. It pops up in all kind of places (I constantly complain to the publications that allow them to advertise). They try and frighten you into buying the registered version since the freebie doesn't do squat. As far as I am concerned it is spyware. Don't click on it and most importantly don't buy it!

Tip1"For today->FireFox Extentions below) Use "Adblock-Plus&Adblock FilterSet.G Updater for Blocking "Iframes". Iframes can be used by a Hacker to Compromise your Computer.

Say no to smileys, e-card sites and other "cute" downloads My mother-in-law is notorious for getting adware / spyware on her computer from "cute" stuff she downloads off the internet. I'm talking innocent sounding things like e-cards, Smileys, kitten Screensavers, etc, etc. The thing is, the companies offering these "cute" and free products need to make their money somehow, and it's often by way of installing, unwanted, ad-ware or Spyware on to your computer. So just say no to these kinds of downloads.

Common Sense When it comes to protecting your personal information directly, just use common sense! Don't give your real name to any sites except trusted online retailers and the like. Use a second e-mail address if you sign up for a mailing list. Use a proxy if you're going to download 50 GB a day of copyrighted stuff. Use your firewall to block all internet connections except your browser and other essentials. In essence, use your brain.

Anti-Virus Software Install a top Anti-Virus Sofware such as Avira Personal Edition, which is a free software package from Avira. Make sure you keep it updated.

Convenience and Security are Mutually Exclusive Convenience is dangerous. Multiple NON-saved passwords are a MUST. Sign up for a website with the same password that you use for the e-mail account you gave and you may have just given unscrupulous admins or hackers access to your e-mail, which for some people includes enough information for Identity Theft. Keep a MINIMUM of four (4) different passwords: Home System login E-mail account login Website/Forum login Commerce/Banking site login

Routine Maintenance Manually run full checks of spyware, anti-virus, and other security software at least once a week. If you use Windows, check for new programs running in the background, and remove them through msconfig or an uninstall.

Secure your Wireless AP WPA2 is the best defense for home access points. For businesses, use 802.1x authentication with PEAP and a RADIUS server to verify domain credentials. Grant users access to the AP via security groups in Active Directory.

Everyone already knows... Email Attachements and IM files Never open an attachement/file from an instant messenger you recieve unless you know what it's supposed to be already and are expecting it. You should use an antivirus program (Avira For Windows is free, so no excuses) to check all attachements and anything you get through instant messengers. No matter how much you trust the sender, you can't trust their computer to choose who's side it's on Download Avira Antivr Personal Below.

Educate yourself and your family! Learn at least the basics about the most common PC threats - Spyware, Adware, email scams, and viruses. Share this information with ALL PC users in your home, including the kids. Teach everyone to be careful about what they download (including Screensavers and browser "helper bars", and to opt out where possible of Adware add-ons to software downloads.

Remove as many programs as possible A new computer will probably come with a large number of programs that run automatically but that you do not want. It is worth your time to learn how to remove them. Each program you remove is one less thing that can break, confuse, or leak personal information. You will have more time to learn about the programs you do use, and knowledge is the best security measure!

Turn on the display of file types in Windows When you click on a file, Windows uses the last three letters of the file's name to figure out what to do with it. Unfortunately, Windows is usually set up to hide the last three letters! You need that information to avoid mistakes and trickery. To display the file type:

1. Double-click My Computer 2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options… 3. Click the View tab 4. Scroll down to the line Hide file Extensions for known file types and 5.uncheck the box next to it.Click OK

Create Logons for family members (windows xp) Take advantage of Windows XP functionality. Set up a logon for each family member, especially the kids, that are Limited accounts. This will partially limit their ability to install things they download - even accidentally. For young kids (such as mine - preschool), set up shortcuts to all the kids sites on the main desktop. Then remove all other windows default stuff. You'd be amazed at what a 4yr old can get into. This simple thing has helped us a lot.

Lies & Deception I lie, If it's not a bank or a very trusted institution, they get slight variations of my personal data. For some sites I'm born on a Tuesday for others it's a Friday.

Wireless Lockdown Password protect your Wireless network, the longer password the better. Do not broadcast your SSID. Only use WPA2 or better encryption (NEVER USE WEP). Enable mac-address-filtering. Also, Seperate your wireless networks from your Internal Networks.

Don't trust your web-browser With the ubiquity of Javascript and weak input-validation on various ASP/PHP/Perl web-sites, XSS and XSRF are on the rise. Also as the amount of web-browser vulnerabilities begins to rise, one should stop trusting their web-browser to always be a perfect sandbox. Make sure you are running the latest version of your Web Browser of choice, as well as install a Javascript/Java/Flash white-listing plug-in (such as NoScript for Mozilla Firefox Also use the Quick-Java Extension<-Click-off Click-on).

Get a Firewall, Learn How to Use It In the days of always-on Internet connections having a firewall on your personal system is at least as important as updating your security patches. There's plenty of them out there available to and useable by the beginner, some of them for free. A good firewall will stop incoming and outgoing traffic that you don't want or know about, and the Windows Firewall is just not enough. Go get "Subelt-FireWall" and Free to try still works after Trial ends but you lose a few items you need for more Protection its a must have Firewall.

Use Secure maching for online banking Have a machine that is only used for online banking, and keeping the company books. My other machine I use for email and web surfing. Keep anti-virus, Anti-Spyware running on both. Then secure your router - change the default password and lock down any ports that are not used.

Install Anti-Spyware software There's just no reason not to install anti-Spyware software anymore. Avira Free Security Scan with Avira"&Security Scan with CounterSpyv2 -> application is free for 15 Days by millions of people. Where to find CounterSpy on this Web-page.ts Free for 15 Days to Try or Buy "Download it Below.

Firefox is a popular, open-source alternative to Microsoft's Internet Explorer. Given most browser exploits target IE because millions use it as their default, Firefox gains safety advantages just for not being the front runner. Others argue Firefox is simply a better browser and is programmed to be more secure than IE. But that's not really the point. Simply using the less targeted browser spares you from many online attacks and there are some good security plug-ins&Extensions to make FireFox even safer.

Tweak your PC's security, then back up the disk image A backup utility such as Norton Ghost allows you to save every byte on your C drive as a disk image. Once you have tweaked all your applications' options the way you want them and made sure your firewall and anti-spy/virus software are in ship-shape, back up the entire disk as an image file. Any sign of security breach? Restore the image. Also theirs other Backup Utilitys

Turn on automatic updates in Windows XP XP lets users decide when and how to download and install security patches. While the safest bet is to turn it on so patches are applied as soon as possible, Microsoft abused this trust with their users by including updates that weren't about security. Best to download automatically, and then clean out any updates you don't want -- such as WGA or a new version of a media player.

Start-Up Programs Many Virus's, Trojans, Malware, will look for documents/files with names like "Credit Card.Doc", though this seems stupid ive seen atleast 10 people who have their details in a document so they can easily access it! Stupid Idea. Click Start > Run and type "Msconfig" most things starting with your Pc will be in their, you can disable most of them without getting problems on your system. this will help prevent a virus from starting-up in your pc

Don't use Outlook Microsoft Outlook (aside from being extremely clumsy to use) has a long and sordid history of security exploits. Simply switching from Outlook or Outlook Express to another email client (such as Mozilla Thunderbird or Eudora) significantly reducses your chance of being exploited by trojans and viruses.

Encrypt Sensitive Information Do not store sensitive information (like passwords, personal information or state secrets) unencrypted on your computer. There are (free and for profit) password containers and file/drive encryption programs out there.

Use them! Personally I use the free and open source program TrueCrypt (http://www.truecrypt.org/) to create encrypted drives to store stuff like work-related documents. (I work as an consultant, so it is important to me -- and to my clients.)

Use Knoppix on Unfamiliar PCs Go traveling without a laptop? Use internet cafes or public library computers? You should expect those computers are infected with keyboard loggers that will steal your passwords. Download a Knoppix CD, a copy of Linux with a browser and other tools, stick it in the unfamiliar computer's CD drive and you will have a clean, temporary operating system.
